To gain a different perspective of the city, head to these historic passageways which have long been at the heart of the capital’s distinctive local heritage.
Situated in the older part of the metropolis, the labyrinth of narrow lanes dates back over 300 years. They are draped in history and the unique architecture offers an insight into past times in the capital. Many residents have called this area home for generations, including some of Beijing’s most fascinating figures.

This fascinating exploration provides a perfect insight into the past, present and future of Beijing’s famed network of historic alleyways and the people who have lived there.
Take a walk through the neighbourhoods around Dengshikou and Dongsi, which were once home to Peking’s elite during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Your knowledgeable guide will tell you about the missionaries, ministers, scientists and diplomats who have lived here, including Hua Guofeng, the unfortunate successor to Chairman Mao. Discuss the evolution of these spaces and what the future development of Beijing means for the preservation of these historic alleyways.
In Zhihua Temple, a Ming-era Buddhist temple filled with remarkable treasures, relax while watching a performance of Ming Dynasty court music performed on traditional instruments.
The Shijia Hutong Museum used to be the home of a famous writer during the Qing Dynasty and beautifully captures the essence of this ancient district. Wander through the retro-style rooms dating back to the 1950s and listen to a fascinating audio experience for an immersion into the atmosphere of a bygone era.
At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.
