To gain a different perspective of the capital’s food and in particular its breakfast scene, head to these historic hutongs which have long been at the heart of the capital’s distinctive local culture.
Situated in the older part of the city, this labyrinth of narrow lanes dates back over 300 years. They are draped in history, offering an insight into the Beijing of old. While many residents have called this area home for generations, it is also sprinkled with signs of contemporary life – with trendy bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques lining the pedestrianised streets.

Visit a local market where you can sample popular street foods such as steamed buns called baozi and Halal beef soup. Try Chinese doughnuts and soybean milk in a tiny shophouse that sells out daily. End the morning in a local coffee shop overlooking iconic hutong-tiled rooftops and revel in one of the most historic areas of the capital.
