New electronic travel requirement for Thailand entry
Thailand will introduce an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visa-free travellers in December 2024, with full implementation expected from June 2025 onwards.
According to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new initiative is expected to improve visitor flow and enhance national security, while maintaining Thailand as a top tourist destination. ETA is in line with other global destinations, such as Canada, South Korea and the United States who have all implemented similar systems.
Under the new policy, travellers from 93 countries who currently benefit from visa-free entry into Thailand will be required to complete the mandatory ETA online prior to entering the kingdom. ETA will be integrated with Thailand’s existing e-Visa platform, streamlining the process for all visitors, whether they arrive by air, land or sea.
ETA will be free of charge, allowing single entry for stays of up to 60 days, with the possibility of extending for an additional 30 days. Travellers are expected to benefit from smoother and faster arrivals through automated passport gates at immigration checkpoints.
