Luang Prabang trials car-free zones

From February 24 to March 2, 2025, Luang Prabang is trialling a Sustainable Urban and Transport Management Project designed to enhance mobility and reduce vehicle congestion in the UNESCO listed town.

The initiative is seen as a step toward making travel within the country’s leading tourism destination eco-friendlier and more sustainable. During the trial, Sisavangvong and Sakkaline roads will be designated car-free zones from 8 am to noon and 5 pm to 11 pm, with only residents allowed to use their vehicles during these hours.

Free public transport, including smart buses and tuk-tuk shuttles, will be available from 6 am to 11 pm to assist visitors visiting the Old Town. Additionally, park-and-ride facilities at That Luang Park will allow drivers to park their vehicles. From there, a shuttle service can take guests into the pedestrian zone.

The initial feedback has been positive. If successful, the scheme may become long-term, making Luang Prabang a greener place. For more information, Asian Trails Laos
