New facial recognition system at Thai airports

Travellers to Thailand will soon be able to enjoy smoother journeys with the introduction of a new automated biometric identification system.

The new process will be implemented at six Thai airports, effective 1 November 2024 for domestic travellers and 1 December 2024 for international travellers.

Utilising facial recognition technology, the system will enable passengers to proceed directly from the baggage drop-off area to the boarding gate without having to present their passports or boarding passes.

When checking in at the counter or using a self-service kiosk, passengers will be asked to give their consent for their identification information to be accessed electronically. The technology will then gather biometric data and travel itineraries to expedite travellers’ movement through the airport. Each registration will apply to a single journey only.

The six airports using this technology are Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport and Hat Yai International Airport.
