Alternative approach in Myanmar
Exploration of Inle Lake reveals the unconventional cultivation of crops on floating garden beds. The native Inthar people gather weeds to create floating farms, anchored by bamboo.
These plots rise and fall with the water level, so are resistant to flooding, plus the nutrient-rich water yields true organic produce. Inle is the second largest lake in Myanmar and home to fishermen who use a distinctive rowing style that involves standing on one leg and wrapping their other leg around the oar so they can remain upright and see reeds blocking their passage.
Our tour of this scenery is enhanced with a canoeing trip, followed by lunch served in a local family’s home.
