Asian Trails inspects Phnom Penh’s new airport

Asian Trails recently visited the highly anticipated Techo International Airport (TIA) to gain a special preview of this landmark development, set to open in July 2025.

With construction now over 90 per cent complete, our Cambodia Product Manager, Diego Santacroce, and Operations Manager, Sothea Pensin, were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the vast complex, located 20 km south of Phnom Penh.

The visit, organised by the Cambodia Tourism Association, revealed TIA’s potential to elevate Cambodia’s tourism industry. Officials said it will have the capacity to facilitate up to 50 million passengers annually.

The $1.3 billion project is due for completion in May 2025. Spanning 26,000,000 sq-m, it will be the ninth largest airport in the world and categorised to the highest ‘4F’ class, capable of accommodating the largest aircraft. An onsite solar farm will power the site and rainwater will be harvested to meet sustainability commitments.

The introduction of direct flights between Phnom Penh and key international destinations will position the Cambodian capital as a regional transportation hub, boost tourism growth, enhance visitor infrastructure and create new business opportunities for local communities.
