Lunar New Year festivities in Malaysia and Singapore
Celebrations are kicking off this week as communities across Asia ring in the Lunar New Year.
The streets are brimming with red lanterns, cherry blossoms and oranges – common symbols of wealth and good luck at this time of year.
Singapore’s Chinatown is buzzing with a street market and festive light-up spectacle, while in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, the celebrations are centred around Petaling Street, where lion dances and festive decorations ring in the festive vibe.
A highlight of the festival is Singapore’s Chingay Parade, an extravagant display of costumes, floats and cultural performances that showcase the nation’s artistic diversity. This year’s parade will take place on 7-8 February 2025. Fireworks and lantern displays will also feature in the Marina Bay area.
Visitors can soak up the special atmosphere and experience traditional ceremonies at local temples like Thian Hock Keng in Singapore, Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur and Kek Lok Si Temple in Georgetown, Penang.
During the festive period, it is common for families to gather over a feast of festive fare. The auspicious meal often begins with a tossing of the yee sang salad, a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Other festive treats include bak kwa (sweet pork jerky) and tang yuan (glutinous rice balls).
