Deputy Managing Director | Thailand
About the role
The Deputy Managing Director (DMD) plays a critical leadership role within the organisation, supporting the Managing Director in overseeing the operations, strategic planning and growth initiatives of the company. As a senior executive, the DMD will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the company by leading key departments, enhancing client relationships, managing internal teams and driving business development.
Strong relationship and stakeholder management within the Asian Trails Group is vital, especially when collaborating with Managing Director colleagues. An ability to provide support and coaching for market managers and analysts is also required, providing colleagues with advice, skills and know-how on how to improve and excel in their roles.
Responsibilities
1. Operational Oversight
- Assist the Managing Director in managing all daily sales and operations activities of ATT offices including head office in Bangkok and branch offices in Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and Samui;
- Supervise and support department heads, ensuring operational efficiency in key areas;
- Identify operational challenges and implement solutions to optimise performance and profitability;
- Prepare for internal operational audits (health & safety, transportation etc.)
2. Strategic Leadership
- Lead and manage direct reports from all assigned departments. Undertake regular trips throughout Thailand including visits of branch offices;
- Collaborate with the Managing Director and senior management team to define and execute long-term business strategies and growth initiatives;
- Contribute to the formulation and execution of the company’s vision, mission and corporate values;
- Drive innovation and foster a culture of continuous improvement, creativity and service excellence across the organisation.
3. Business Development & Client Relations
- Support business development efforts, including identifying new business opportunities, partnerships and markets to expand the company’s reach;
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key clients, vendors, travel agencies, tour operators and stakeholders;
- Ensure close internal collaboration between stakeholders to eventually grow the company’s portfolio of products and services, exploring new market opportunities;
- Represent the company during official and private functions upon request by MD/CEO.
4. Team Leadership and Talent Management
- Foster a positive and productive work environment that attracts, develops and retains top talent;
- Ensure that the team is aligned with organisational goals, values and standards;
- Lead and develop staff through coaching and performance management to optimise individual and team contributions.
5. Risk Management
- Deal with and, during exceptional circumstances such as severe weather situations, be responsible for coordinated and structured crisis management, including constant report to clients and MD.
6. Reporting & Communication
- Regularly update the Managing Director on business performance, key projects and any challenges or opportunities;
- Ensure effective internal communication across all departments, promoting transparency and cross-functional collaboration;
- Lead or contribute to high-level decision-making processes by providing relevant data, insights and strategic recommendations.
7. Extended Duties
- AT group representative handling;
- Monthly operational reporting;
- MICE coordination for AT group;
- Corporate Social Responsibility.
8. Sustainability Missions
- Know and communicate our sustainability policy to the team: “Asian Trails and its sustainable practices” and “Asian Trails Code of Conduct”;
- Make sure the policies are respected by everyone;
- Take the Travelife basic training on Travelife website as soon as possible (max 1 year);
- Monitor the internal management and requirements:
- Energy saving by switching off equipment’s and lights when not in use;
- Water saving;
- Double sided printing;
- Separate waste properly according to the local waste management system;
- Limit or prohibit single use plastics and other disposable equipment.
- Encourage staff to participate and take part in CSR actions and organisation.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 – 5 years of sales and general leadership experience in Asia required.
- Strong knowledge of strategic commercial processes, especially strong technical and analytical skills.
- Well-rounded general business acumen;
- Very strong negotiation skills (focused on partnerships);
- A clear communicator who is ambitious, hardworking and independent minded;
- A pro-active decision maker with strong people skills, who can adapt quickly to the company’s operating environment and capture the trust and respect of colleagues at all levels and in all geographies;
- Proven organisational skills (focused on multi-tasking and project management);
- Presentation skills (focus on presenting to diverse groups – CEO to Market Managers);
- Coaching, training and team member development skills.
