Caring for Malaysia’s elephants
In October 2024, Asian Trails’ Malaysia team visited the National Elephant Conservation Centre (NECC) in Kuala Gandah as part of our company’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility.
The visit was conducted to enhance our team’s knowledge about wildlife conservation, specifically in relation to elephants. Thirty staff joined the event, taking part in activities to care for the jumbos, such as feeding them nutritious meals and cleaning out their shelters.
The group learned valuable lessons about how to earn the jumbos’ trust and respect in order to provide the best care. Hands-on experiences provided a deeper understanding about how the centre works to rescue, rehabilitate and release elephants back into the wild, where possible.
Our team observed some of the elephants’ skills, such as standing on two legs or pulling heavy objects. These skills are not taught for entertainment purposes, but rather to help the vets and mahouts (handlers) perform medical checks which ensure each elephant has a clean bill of health.
This activity reflects Asian Trails’ commitment to delivering responsible travel experiences across our destinations. The animal interaction equips our staff with improved knowledge to inform and involve guests in conservation efforts as they travel, providing them with greater satisfaction as they enjoy ethical, sustainable and eco-friendly encounters with animals across Asia.
