Maya Bay closed temporarily for marine rehabilitation
Three of Southern Thailand’s coastal attractions, including the famous Maya Bay, will be closed for two months from 1 August to 30 September 2024. The closure is aimed at promoting the long-term health and sustainability of these area’s natural eco-systems.
With its iconic limestone cliffs and white sand beaches, Maya Bay has become one of Thailand’s most recognisable destinations. It was made famous by The Beach, the Hollywood blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which was filmed in this location in 1999.
Visitors will not be able to enter the famous bay in Thailand’s Krabi province during the two-month closure, although sightseeing and taking photos from a close distance is possible. In addition to Maya Bay, nearby Loh Samah Bay and Lo Ko Bay will also be closed.
Krabi is home to many other equally beautiful sites which visitors can explore during this period. Highlights include Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island.
