Hiking and Sightseeing
on Sacred Mount Emei
Experience a natural high at Mount Emei, a sacred Buddhist mountain. Trek to the Golden
Summit for far-reaching views; visit the ancient Wannian Temple; and relax in the
serene surroundings of Qingyin Pavilion surrounded by streams and trees.
WHY THIS TOUR?
The 3,099-metre-tall Mount Emei is one of four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. This mysterious mountain is traditionally regarded as a place of enlightenment and is believed to be where Buddhism was first introduced into China. This holy mountain is covered with lush forests and tumbling waterfalls where mischievous Tibetan macaques roam freely.
The hillsides are dotted with revered Buddhist temples that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Every morning, streams of pilgrims armed with joss sticks conquer the steep stairs and swarm into the countless monasteries. From the main peak, known as the Golden Summit, you can look out over snowy mountains to the west and the vast plain to the east.
TRAIL ITINERARY
08:00 - 17:00
Today, you will get to experience a natural high. The driver and guide will collect you from the hotel and head out of the city to Emeishan, a journey of about two-and-half hours. Upon arrival at Mount Emei, which sits on the edge of the Sichuan Basin, you will drive part way up the mountain. Then set out on foot for a hike up to the Golden Summit. Photograph the epic golden statue that rises 480-metres-high and enjoy the far-reaching views.
Wannian Temple, which dates back to the 4th century, is one of the largest temples on the mountain. Throughout its history, this ancient temple has endured several strong earthquakes but still remains standing and is now believed to be a miracle of Chinese architecture. You can wander through the temple complex to see a beautiful bronze statue of Puxian riding an elephant. Over 1,000-years-old, this intimidating statue is eight-metres-high and weighs over 62 tonnes.
On lower Mount Emei you will visit Qingyin Pavilion, which was built by a Buddhist monk during the Tang Dynasty. The pavilions, towers and corridors of this serene garden temple are located on a wild rocky outcrop around a fast-flowing stream. The pavilion serves as the ideal location to appreciate the surrounding valleys and forests in peace and contemplation.
Lunch is at a local restaurant. At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.
