Discover Cambodia’s spiritual birthplace
A spiritual peak that gave birth to the Khmer Kingdom is gaining ground as a popular walking destination. Kulen National Park is home to Phnom Kulen Mountain, a 487-metres-high summit that played a pivotal role in the history of the Khmer empire. It was from here in 802 A.D. that Jayavarman II proclaimed himself a devaraja (god-king), thereby creating a leader and state.
This sanctuary is a paradise for rural exploration and easily accessible – just 48 km north of Siem Reap. Part of the park has been turned into a sanctuary for the elephants that once carried visitors around the Angkor temples. Attractions include a giant reclining Buddha, a riverbed of 1000 lingas, plus an attractive waterfall that was featured in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
Our Cambodia team has devised an excellent trekking tour that takes in this park’s leading attractions.
